In response to the extensive devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl in South Texas on July 8, the State of Texas is extending a helping hand to residents affected by the severe weather event.

The hurricane's aftermath, characterized by widespread flooding, property damage, and electrical outages affecting millions, has prompted state authorities to offer support, particularly to participants of nutrition assistance programs.

Residents enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program are now eligible to request replacements for food and formula damaged or lost in the storm's wake.

This initiative, announced by Acting Governor Dan Patrick, aims to alleviate the hardships endured by families throughout the state, with many still grappling with the recent heatwave and persistent power outages.

Procedure for Requesting Replacement Benefits

To address the urgent needs of SNAP recipients, those in the 121 counties recognized in the disaster declarations have until August 8 to apply for their replacement benefits.

Application channels include calling the 2-1-1 helpline and selecting "option 8," or by submitting Form H1855 to the Texas Health and Human Services Commission via download, completion, and mail.

Recipients outside these counties are advised to visit their local benefits office within ten days upon recognizing their loss.

Meanwhile, WIC participants are urged to pursue their replacement food and formula benefits by personally visiting their nearest WIC office before July 31.

For office locations and more information, participants can visit TexasWIC.org or call (800) 942-3678 during regular hours and choose "option 3."

Additionally, the 24/7 lactation support hotline remains operational at (855) 550-6667 for breastfeeding support and assistance.

Expanded Support and Resources

Acknowledging the broader impacts of Hurricane Beryl, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission is offering crisis counseling through local mental health authorities.

Those in need of mental health services can find more information on the commission's website under the "Where Can I Find Services" section.

Furthermore, Texans seeking additional aid, including SNAP and Medicaid benefits, are encouraged to apply online at YourTexasBenefits.com or via the Your Texas Benefits mobile app. For direct access to local resources like food or shelter, dialing 2-1-1 and choosing “option 1” links individuals to the necessary support services.

As the state forges ahead with its recovery efforts from Hurricane Beryl, these initiatives underscore Texas's dedication to ensuring that its residents have the critical support needed during this challenging period.
